Performance: Perennial
Perovskia atriplicifolia, commonly known as Russian Sage, is an excellent summer perennial for a xeric garden. Bluish-lavender flowers create a misty mass atop silver-gray foliage for some cool summer color. In the landscape, Perovskia atriplicifolia loves full sun and makes a great backdrop for smaller plants.
Despite its common name, Russian Sage does not come from Russia, it originates from central parts of Asia including Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, and Tibet. However, the genus Perovskia derives from a 19th century imperial Russian general and statesman, Vasily Alekseevich Perovski. Crush the plant’s aromatic leaves for the fresh scent of Sage; or have some fun with the flowers making a garden fresh bouquet or garnish a summertime dish with its light lavender flowers.
