Width: 2′
Exposure: Shade
Performance: Perennial
Bloom: Yellow (August-November)
The bold, glossy green leaves of Farfugium japonicum ‘Giganteum’ look like something straight out of a tropical oasis. Its attractive large, shiny foliage makes the perfect specimen in any moist, well-drained shade garden. The giant round-to kidney-shaped leaves reach anywhere from 12-15” wide. In late summer/early fall, it produces a 3’ flower stalk with clusters of yellow, daisy-like flowers.
This perennial dies to back to the ground when temperatures reach 20°F, and new foliage emerges in spring. Its lush, tropical foliage may start to wilt, especially in the hottest days of summer, if not provided with a constantly moist environment. Be cautious of snails and slugs because they can significantly damage the plants leaves.
